White Elephant with a Twist Rules

House rules for 15 players

15 playersGift limit $25Gift frozen after 3 steals

Before you start

  1. Everyone brings one wrapped gift worth about $25. No name tags, and disguise the shape if you can.
  2. Put all the gifts in one pile in the middle of the room.
  3. Each player draws a number. The number sets the turn order.

How a turn works

  1. Player 1 picks any wrapped gift from the pile and opens it so everyone can see it.
  2. Each next player chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal any gift that has already been opened.
  3. If your gift is stolen, you choose right away: steal a different opened gift, or open a new one from the pile.
  4. A gift can change hands only once per turn. When the person who lost it picks again, they must choose a different gift or open a new one.

Stealing rules

  1. A gift can be stolen 3 times. After that it is frozen and stays with its owner. Mark it with a sticker so nobody forgets.
  2. No immediate steal-backs: you can't take back the gift that was just stolen from you on the same turn.

The twist: Final steal round

  1. After the last gift is opened, start a 2-minute final round: going in number order, each player may make one last steal (frozen gifts are still safe).

End of the game

  1. The game ends when the last gift in the pile has been opened and any steals on that turn are done.
  2. Player 1 never got to steal, so they get one final move: they may swap their gift with any unfrozen gift, or keep what they have.
  3. Whatever you hold at the end is yours. Trading after the game is allowed only if both people agree.

7 White Elephant twists

  1. Final steal round. After the last gift is opened, start a 2-minute final round: going in number order, each player may make one last steal (frozen gifts are still safe).
  2. Blind swap. Nobody unwraps until the very end. You steal by shape, weight and shake. Everyone opens together when the last gift is picked.
  3. Mystery cards. Mark five number tickets with a star. A starred player may make one bonus move on their turn: swap any two opened gifts, or freeze their own gift.
  4. Reverse round. When half the gifts are open, flip the order: the highest number goes next and play continues back down to number 1.
  5. Dice round finale. After every gift is opened, set a 5-minute timer and pass a die around: 1–2 swap left, 3–4 swap right, 5 steal any gift, 6 keep yours. Stop when the timer rings.
  6. Theme gifts. Every gift must fit a theme (for example “something red”, “as seen on TV” or “made in our state”). Off-theme gifts can be stolen once more than the limit.
  7. Left-right story. After all gifts are opened, read a short story aloud. Every time you hear “left” or “right”, everyone passes their gift that way. Whatever you hold at “The End” is yours.

FAQ

What is White Elephant with a twist?

It's the normal White Elephant game plus one extra rule that changes the strategy, such as a final steal round for everyone, gifts that stay wrapped until the end, or a timed dice round after the last gift is opened.

What's the best twist for an office party?

The final steal round. It keeps everyone engaged until the end, and it's easy to explain in one sentence. The dice finale is a close second if you have a TV for the timer.

Can I combine two twists?

Yes, but keep it to two at most. Theme gifts and the left-right story combine well, because one changes what people bring and the other changes the ending.
