How Many Gifts Per Person in White Elephant?
Updated October 17, 2026
The short answer: one wrapped gift per player. Everyone who brings a gift plays, and everyone who plays brings a gift, so the number of gifts always equals the number of players and nobody goes home empty-handed.
The common edge cases
Couples
If both partners want to play, they each bring a gift and each draw a number. If only one wants to play, they bring one gift and the other partner just watches (and gives advice on what to steal).
Kids at a family party
Either kids play in their own swap with a lower price limit (see White Elephant for kids), or an adult brings a gift on the child's behalf and they play as a team.
Someone forgot a gift
They can still watch, or the host keeps one or two spare gifts in the closet. A box of chocolates and a $20 gift card are both easy spares.
Late arrivals
Print a few extra number tickets. A late player draws from the leftovers; if their number has already been called, they take the next turn.
Odd numbers or uneven teams
Odd numbers don't matter in White Elephant. There are no pairs, unlike in Secret Santa.
How many gifts for a long game?
Some groups want a longer game, so they ask each player to bring two gifts and play two rounds. That works, but keep the same price limit per gift and use a shorter timer for round two, because attention fades after about 45 minutes.
FAQ
Do you bring one gift per person or per couple to White Elephant?
One per person playing. Couples who both play bring two gifts; if only one partner plays, they bring one.
What if there are more gifts than people?
Leftover gifts can go to the host, a raffle at the end, or a final round where anyone can trade their gift for a leftover.
