White Elephant Rules for Large Groups

With 40 people, classic White Elephant can drag past two hours. These rules keep a large group moving: shorter turns, a lower steal limit and a visible gift table. Most groups finish in about 30–45 minutes.

Large Group White Elephant Rules

House rules for 40 players

40 playersGift limit $25Gift frozen after 2 steals30-second turns

Before you start

  1. Everyone brings one wrapped gift worth about $25. No name tags, and disguise the shape if you can.
  2. Put all the gifts in one pile in the middle of the room.
  3. Each player draws a number (hand out numbered tickets as guests arrive). The number sets the turn order.

How a turn works

  1. Player 1 picks any wrapped gift from the pile and opens it so everyone can see it.
  2. Each next player chooses: open a new gift from the pile, or steal any gift that has already been opened.
  3. If your gift is stolen, you choose right away: steal a different opened gift, or open a new one from the pile.
  4. A gift can change hands only once per turn. When the person who lost it picks again, they must choose a different gift or open a new one.
  5. Each decision gets 30 seconds. If time runs out, the player must open a new gift.

Stealing rules

  1. A gift can be stolen 2 times. After that it is frozen and stays with its owner. Mark it with a sticker so nobody forgets.
  2. No immediate steal-backs: you can't take back the gift that was just stolen from you on the same turn.

End of the game

  1. The game ends when the last gift in the pile has been opened and any steals on that turn are done.
  2. Player 1 never got to steal, so they get one final move: they may swap their gift with any unfrozen gift, or keep what they have.
  3. Whatever you hold at the end is yours. Trading after the game is allowed only if both people agree.

Large group tips

  1. Use a 30-second turn limit and a steal limit of 2 so 40 players finish in about 36 minutes.
  2. Display opened gifts on a table at the front (or on a TV) so people can choose a steal quickly.
  3. With more than 40 people, split into two groups with their own gift piles, or play two rounds of a timed dice game.
  4. Use a microphone or speak loudly. Call each number and the gift choice so the back row can follow.

FAQ

How do you play White Elephant with a large group?

Hand out numbers as people arrive, limit each turn to 30 seconds, freeze gifts after 2 steals, and put opened gifts on a table at the front. With more than 40–50 people, split into two groups.

What's the best steal limit for big groups?

Two. With 3 or more steals, popular gifts bounce around the room and a 40-person game can last over an hour.

Can large groups play the dice version instead?

Yes. The dice game is timed, so it ends when the timer does no matter how many people play. Use 20 minutes for 40 people and roll fast.
